From East Africa to Advent: A Season of Calling

Hey ,

Greetings to you in this sweet time of year, as we slow down and take part in watching, waiting, and meditating on the Advent of Christ, the One who came and is coming again. We live in hope for that Day.

I am thrilled to share with you all that has unfolded over the last few months: where my heart has been, and all that the Lord has done and spoken.

Ministry Trip to East Africa

The fall seemed to pass in the blink of an eye, and before I knew it, my sister and I were boarding a plane to East Africa.

We had been longing for time with the team there— too deepen relationships, allow them to flourish, and to help lead, strengthen, and participate in a fifty hour prayer gathering with local believers in the region.

Before committing to a two year assignment, we sensed this short-term trip would be a tremendous opportunity to gain clarity and experience another installment of life there, before deployment.

While on the trip, the Lord confirmed again and again His calling on my life in this season, to this region and its people. Once more, I was blown away by the mutual strengthening found within the international Body of Christ.

Though I came to serve and bless others, I found myself incredibly ministered to in ways I hadn’t even realized I deeply needed, through the fellowship, the leadership, the Arabic worship, the hugs, the laughter, and of course, the food.

The kindness of the Lord exceeded my expectations. It’s no wonder we will spend the everlasting age searching out the immeasurable riches of His grace, expressed through His kindness to us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:7).

Not only was the trip a breath of fresh air and a gift from the Lord, but it sealed something deep within me. This place is becoming my home…because I desire it, and because He does too.

Becoming Part of the Global Family at MAPS

Just a few weeks ago, Maddie and I loaded up the Prius and headed to Richmond, Virginia, to officially onboard as staff with MAPS Global. A desire that had been growing for months was finally becoming reality.

I am now officially on staff! My role with MAPS Global is on the planting team for the East Africa base. What an honor it is to be sent out by such a devoted family of believers and missionaries.

During my time in Virginia, I was once again deeply moved by the culture MAPS has cultivated, one marked by joy, servant leadership, and genuine care, to name just a few of their core values. Years of prayer, sacrifice, and intentional work have gone into creating a safe and life-giving organization, and I can honestly say I’ve experienced nothing like it.
Not only is it a dream to take the name of Christ to East Africa and raise an altar for His glory there, but it is also a privilege to belong to this spiritual family—to be trained by them and to help call forth the next generation into the very things that have captured my heart.

Home for Now

For now, my sister and I are back in Kansas City preparing to begin the long-term missionary journey. We are eager to pour ourselves into this season so we can be sent to that beautiful region.

At the same time, I am deeply thankful for this sacred window with family before all the transition. I am soaking up fellowship, resting, and receiving the peace of Christ in this slow and holy Advent season.

Maranatha,

— David

After two months of steady debrief, special time with family and friends, my mind begins little by little to pick up memories from some of the most significant months of my life. I’ll miss my Arab buddies, Saturday night basketball, and cheap shawarma. Those friendships have steadily carried on even to now. I guess I looked a little like them with a fraction of their facial hair, some dark curls, and not pasty white skin, but little did they know the Lord was working through me to plant ever...

Three young adults eating ice cream and cider donuts outside

Hey Reader, Hope you are doing well. It's been a full and enjoyable week, and I want to share one particularly special moment with you. Apple cider donuts & ice cream Update from the field This past Thursday, my fellow students and I sat down to hear testimonies from last year's students who had just returned from North Africa. After their 90 days of praying, preaching, and singing in the 10-40 window, we listened to their firsthand experiences, asked questions, and received prayer from each...

Hey Reader, Somehow I am already halfway through my training phase—how is that even possible? Although I can't slow time down, I can share some of the sweetness that I have experienced these past weeks. Open House Weekend Earlier this month, MAPS hosted an Open House Weekend where people from all over could come experience the school and program first hand. It was a joy to host both my parents and Jess over those days. The time I had with each of them was so precious and timely. Having them...
